This paper analyses the reasons for which the Web became the first successful hypermedia system by looking and evaluating the architecture of the Web, Hyper-G, and Microcosm systems. Three reasons will be given beyond this success with some lessons to learn. Currently, Semantic Web is a recent development of the Web to provide conceptual hypermedia. More importantly, study of the Web with its impact on technical, socio-cultural, and economical agendas is introduced as web science.
